Hey Group;
I am involved with a older system with a SIS 530/620 on board video system. Yes, miserable! The problem is that any SuSE from a boxed set 10.1 to current 10.3.Aplha# fail during booting from CD #1 just about the point at which /dev/udev is showing on the screen. It locks up the whole unit. To rescue this system I have resorted to Fedora Core 6 and it is working at this point. I tried with SuSE at the boot menu to select VESA and TEXT modes plus failsafe. Nothing worked
It appears SuSE's udev is unable to setup a dev console/tty#. The screen goes black and the keyboard is dead.
Anybody found a work around?
This might be improved by assigning more memory to the G-card, and the font sys in the bios of your system.... (with onboard video you at least need 256MB of Ram, but to be able to work with the system you better use 1GB.)

To let you know. It seems it was a BIOS problem. I tried the default settings and it started working, SuSE and Fedora both failed prior to that point. I will say that at least fedora loaded.
Another problem is - can you say SLOW. It is a 500Mhz/512Mb with 7200RPM drives but firefox took about ten minutes to comee up.
It seems that the machine has some buss issues also.
Oh yea the BIOS shows 1997
In that case, i would look for a BIOS- update, and a flash utility to install it. You have to make a start-up disk, regular, and make a back-up from the old bios first. But if you look around, there will be easy readme's coming with the flash-utility, so there will not be a problem. Just look for your mainboard, and find the updates from the vendor. (i did these updates many times, and for some machines it realy made a great difference...) good luck in finding the update..;-) - -- Have a nice day, M9. Now, is the only time that exists.
