dup". Now just have to find away to get icons on the panel and desktop that are not widgets
Two ways to accomplish this: 1. Add a "Folder" applet 2. Right click on the Desktop, "Desktop settings", Switch "Layout" to "Folder"
Actually, the second is a "maximised" version of the first. It shows everything in the $HOME/Desktop folder by default, but you can adjust that.
Thanks.
Yes, and that's actually no different than in KDE4... ;)
On KDE4 you could right click the app in the menu and it would have 2 options "Add to Desktop" and "Add to Panel" - do you know if that is going to be coming to Plasma?
Well, openSUSE uses "Kicker" as default application launcher, which does have those context menu entries here. But they seem to be missing from Kickoff (KDE4's default) at the moment, right-clicking would only show which documents you ever opened with that application I think. No idea whether this has been removed on purpose, or that's a bug.
But you could switch back to Kicker by right-clicking on the icon and selecting "Alternatives", then those options should be there. Thanks. That does work.
Or just drag'n'drop an entry from the menu to the panel/desktop, like it also was possible in KDE4 already. That also works.
It seems at the moment that KDE4 and Plasma's definition of a "Desktop" is different. I would have thought that getting App icons on the "Desktop" should be the same. Its odd that you can only get app icons on the desktop if you have your desktop configured as "Folder View". I've always used "Folder View" as a widget on the desktop. I guess its early days, it looks like i'll have to keep using Kicker as the Plasma Application Launcher is still in early development stages.

You're right that dropping an entry to the desktop directly doesn't work at the moment. Sorry, I didn't notice this. But Plasma's definition of a "Desktop" has not changed at all. It's exactly the same actually: the default "Desktop" is basically just empty space where you can put plasmoids, like the folderview, a comic, or "Icons". If you want to have an icon on the desktop, add an "Icon" plasmoid. It's just that the automatism that creates an "Icon" when you drop a menu entry doesn't seem to work at the moment. A bug report has been filed: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346867

??? Actually Kickoff is older than Kicker. It was already there in (openSUSE's) KDE3. It's definitely not in "early development stages"... But recently a new feature has been added as indicated: the right-click menu should now show the documents you opened with that application. Apparently those "Add to Desktop/Panel" contect menu entries got lost while adding that. This is already reported btw: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334722 Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
