[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed - Plasma Desktop freezes frequently.
Just days back I migrated to Tumbleweed from Leap 42.2. I have been have this frequent issue when the GUI becomes unresponsive. All I can do is to move the mouse pointer. However I can login to the host using ssh and reboot the system and that's how I get my pc running. My Graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce GT 710. The TV is connected to the PC through an HDMI cable. I am using the native Nouveau driver. Not sure if it due to this but it has always happened when using ProjectM visualization in Clementine Music player. I never had this problem when using Leap 42.2. Also I have FC27 in another drive on the same PC. This freezing never happens with FC27 too. Each time it happens, this is what I see in the logs. What do you think is happening? I don't know whether you are using Wayland or Xorg, but if using one, try the other. If that doesn't help, it's worth trying the other FOSS Xorg driver in an Xorg session. To use: Ctrl-Alt-Fn login as root zypper rm xf86-video-nouveau log out of your X session restart X or reboot log into an Xorg/Plasma session and see if it helps. If you check Xorg.0.log you should see instead of nouveau(0) Xorg reports you are using modeset(0) (on the lines that say "connected" and many others). It's what my GT218 uses in 42.2, 42.3, 15.0 and TW. Other things to try may not help, but it shouldn't hurt to try: 1-disable Plymouth, temporarily by appending plymouth.enable=0 to the boot stanza you use in Grub. If it helps, remove the plymouth package with zypper or yast. 2-Deselect enble compositor on startup -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." I am using Xorg. Will definitely try wayland because on the FC27 where I don't see the problem, it is wayland.
Ctrl-Alt-Fn login as root zypper rm xf86-video-nouveau log out of your X session restart X or reboot log into an Xorg/Plasma session
OK. Will try this.

Which means I will lose the boot animation. But will try this temporarily.
2-Deselect enble compositor on startup
This I require because of projectM visualizations and desktop effect which will not work with compositor disabled. But thanks for all the suggestions, will try them and see what happens. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

This sounds logical because the freeze always seems to happen with 3D acceleration. After updating to Jul 09 snapshot, I haven't got a single freeze till now. But this is what I will try next if the problem reoccurs. Sorry for stating the obvious. (and I'm actually surprised nobody else did yet. ;-) But have you tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver already? There are packages available for Tumbleweed as well since quite a while... https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. The freeze happened with the proprietary drivers too. But I didn't capture the logs. Also, surprisingly, the CPU utilization of kwin, plasmashell is much lower with the nouveau driver. With leap 42.2, I had better performance with proprietary Nvidia drivers. Yesterday I updated to the 09 July snapshot and I haven't had a freeze even once, even when choosing highest quality and frame rate of ProjectM visualization. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, are you able to switch to a tty using the keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + F1)? If so, login using same user and try running the following command: DISPLAY=:0 XAUTHORITY=".local/share/sddm/.Xauthority" kwin_x11 --replace After running the command, switch back to the graphical session. It may switch back to the tty once, if so please switch again. If this works it would likely narrow down somewhat where the problem is. -- - Karl Cheng (Qantas94Heavy) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It happened again today. This time I had playing a video in Kodi and I had paused the video. After around 30 minutes when I decided to play the video, it wouldn't play and I discovered that the GUI had frozen. Cntrl + ALT + F1 didn't work. The keyboard just wasn't responding. So I logged in from another host using ssh and this is what I find in the journal logs Jul 14 21:03:11 MediaCenter kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: read fault at 0003d00000 engine 1b [CE2] client 18 [GR_CE] reason 0c [UNSUPPORTED_KIND] on channel 8 [007f8a8000 plasmashell[2366]] Jul 14 21:03:11 MediaCenter kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: channel 8: killed Jul 14 21:03:11 MediaCenter kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: runlist 0: scheduled for recovery Jul 14 21:03:11 MediaCenter kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: engine 0: scheduled for recovery Jul 14 21:03:11 MediaCenter kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: engine 6: scheduled for recovery -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, nouveau isn't working well for me too, it even makes kernel panic for me [1]. [1] https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1101238 -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський
