That's fine for you but there are a log of monitoring and security robots which are configured to watch /var/log/messages. Many users have advanced syslog setups running, so please don't remove syslog at least in "zypper dup" case.
The proposal is to remove it from the default isntall, not from the repos. So, if you update, you'll keep syslog. If you do a new install, you won't get it but can install it in addition...
