No, you are not, is just that zypper up -t package is not quite intuitive :(
I think zypper upgrade (or something like zypper upgrade-all) should do what you want (and there is bugzilla entry for that IIRC)
I agree too. Of course now zypper is a lot better than previous versions, but still it needs some improvements so it becomes the tool that really we are looking for.
