At one point openSuse went with XFS as the default file system (1 release I think). It moved away from that when it wanted to use the, then broken grub manager -- which was known to be unreliable at that time.
I've installed every openSUSE release multiple times, most at least a dozen times. Until 12.2, for me who always uses EXT3 for / and if using separate /boot always EXT2 for it, the default boot manager has always been Grub. Starting with 12.2 I never use the default boot manager (Grub2). For me, Grub IIRC has been reliable, though YaST's configuration of it only almost as good. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
