All, The topology patches that I'm pretty sure are in 2.6.31 are partially designed to allow this. (also to allow smart filesystems to align better with the underlying storage.) Martin K. Petersen submitted them, but I have not found a nice summary anywhere. Regardless, he is working with the various partitioning tool teams to get them to utilize the now available topology info to choose partition layout. I believe parted already does.
