And about which icons are you talking about exactly? If it's only about old-style system tray icons (which gapcmon supposedly displays), this should be fixed in Plasma 5.5.1, which is on the way to Tumbleweed (but not there yet, and not mentioned in the mail you quote). For 5.4.3, an updated package of xembed-sni-proxy including the fix is available in KDE:Frameworks5, which you could install if you don't want to wait for the fix to enter Tumbleweed.
