http://snapper.io/2016/05/18/space-aware-cleanup.html "btrfs quota support looks mature enough" vs man btrfs quota: STABILITY STATUS The qgroup implementation has turned out to be quite difficult as it affects the core of the filesystem operation. The users have hit various corner cases over time, eg. wrong accounting or system instability. The situation is gradually improving but currently (4.7) there are still issues found and fixed. and then.... INHERITANCE Things get a bit more complicated when new subvolumes or snapshots are created. Which is exactly what snapper is doing by making an asston of read-only snapshots. Maybe for the time being, back off on how many snapshots are taken and retained, rather than making it a space based computation. I don't see the purpose in retaining more than three rootfs states, or more than a dozen /home states.
