I have a thinkpad T430 with nvidia NVS 5400 M graphics card.
Is that with Optimus enabled or disabled in the BIOS? The T430 has an Nvidia Quadro NVS 5400M... which should be able to run as Optimus=enabled or Optimus=disabled. If Optimus is enabled, then it's no surprise that the open source driver doesn't do much more than what you described. It's also possibly why you encountered "buggy" proprietary drivers. If you simply install the Nvidia proprietary drivers onto a system that has Nvidia Optimus (either as the only config or with it enabled in the BIOS on systems that allow this), you will get loads of crashes and odd behaviour (if you can get it to boot up with video at all).
