There should be a default file in there, it always has been. Years ago it was one with SuSE customizations and information.
My 12.1 install does not have anything in /srv/www/htdocs, which would resemble an index.html
BUT: There is a package with sample pages: apache2-example-pages
Try installing this if you really need 'just to see' that apache works.. Other than that, this package is rather useless.
