It looks like the latest alsa updates suck BIG TIME. Elaborate which update broke it. "the latest alsa updates" doesn't clearly explain which package you updated from which repo.
The possible scenario, judging from your description, is that HDMI is detected as the primary device, and the rest devices weren't loaded because of the slot conflict. Try to remove /etc/modprobe.d/*sound file once.
Takashi
alsa-1.0.19-3.1, I don't know what it was before. Factory repo is baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss type=yast2
Oops, I was looking in /etc/udev/rules.d, /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf is still there and correct. It might be not correct after the kernel update depending on what you set up there. Please show the content.

# o /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-emu10k1 # M71A.ky5tDbN3ic8:MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel # 75Hn.fvIoQ5Canm0:SB0400 Audigy2 Value alias snd-card-1 snd-emu10k1
That's what it always was and after rebooting, sound problems were gone. It was set up with YaST a few weeks back when I added card 1 which is a EMU0404 PCI.
OK, the above looks good, supposing you are using HDMI as the primary device.
Takashi
No, using the inbuilt sound card snd-hda-intel and standard VGA connection to the monitor - haven't tried the HDMI connection so far, but have been thinking about it. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
