Actually, I've done both. I've installed with 256 and then dropped it down to 64MB and it worked just fine although not recently.
I have a GUI running with my 128 MB RAM - icewm.
I ran 11.0/Beta3 on a PowerMac 6500 with 128MB RAM and IceWM and it was slow as molassas with the stock 603e/225.
