Once I saw, elsewhere in the thread, the difference between systemsettings and systemsettings5, I was able to make some progress. I have disabled desktop effects entirely, but that was apparently not the issue with KLauncher hanging. Some context menus also take ~10s to pop up (e.g. in konsole). After looking at the installed packages, I tried installing patterns-openSUSE-kde_plasma, which got me a task bar that I am unable to interact with. So, my outstanding issues are: 1) KLauncher inexplicably hangs for up to a minute when launching applications. It also often lags on input (i.e. takes ~1-2s to register keystrokes). It seems to run commands just fine. I have disabled everything except applications and commands. 2) Unable to interact with desktop or taskbar, and, therefore, unable to configure those widgets. 3) The brightness keys on my laptop are identified. I should be able to set up custom bindings for this (and have just been editing the configuration file in /sys/ since there was never enough granularity to begin with), but this seems like something that should be addressed for the common user. Any help figuring out these issues would be greatly appreciated.
