No, you go and check what the update really did instead of what it should have been doing. Those files are still there, not accessible and when systemd stops putting a tmpfs mount at it they will become accessible again, so trying to make a symlink in the same place will fail until they are removed or renamed.
"This directory contains system information data describing the system since it was booted. ****Files under this directory must be cleared (removed or truncated as appropriate) at the beginning of the boot process*** "
But when switching to systemd it didn't do that and papered a tmpfs mount over a directory that wasn't empty as it didn't care to check this assumption. Besides, the former system didn't clear those files at all (that's been another bug, AFAIK).
