Didn't you update a kernel? Did you rebuild the nvidia driver after that? Anyway, nvidia troubles are something we can do nearly nothing about.
updated kernel and rebuild nvidia driver, in fact three different kernels and four different nvidia drivers w/o resolution. And three of the nvidia drivers and two of the kernels did not previously show the problem but did until today. A reboot today and the problem is gone but I know not why.
