gdb complaining about a *log* of debug-info packages. I installed all requested for vlc packages. Are the rest necessary? Most are in not configured repos.

You forgot the most important part from the guide: "backtrace" after the segfault.

And please, make sure vlc-codecs is not installed when doing this.
