gnome-power-manager has some inhibit mechanisms. This means an application can say "don't suspend" (eg, when you're burning a CD). And the user can also control this with an applet. However, root should be able to control what power he gives the users over this. Root should be able to disable the ability of users to power off, reset, or hibernate the computer, or on the contrary, force an hibernation; and this regardless of what desktop the user is using.
Sure, and root can do this via gconf (you can have mandatory settings, or change the default settings in gconf).
How?
minas-morgul:~ # gconf-editor Cannot open display: Run 'gconf-editor --help' to see a full list of available command line options.
xhost +localhost (yes, it's insecure, but on a local workstation ...) More secure: ssh -X root@localhost We used to have 'sux' in former times for exactly that reason, I don't know where and why it's gone.
