The best method for recovering your drive image, I know of, is dd_rhelp from the ddrescue package. It is a script which uses dd_rescue to recover as much data as possible, I have even recovered working images from bad video dvds using it. Go to (if you have ddrescue installed of course) file:///usr/share/doc/packages/ddrescue/README.dd_rhelp for a detailed explanation of how it works.
