Mirrorbrain works on the simple premise that a national connection will be faster than an international or an intercontinental. That is just not always true. For instance, for many Canadian users, connections to the US are frequently better than domestic connections, e.g. to Canadian university mirrors. I second the question of "where is the slowness?" - is it e.g. about pure download speed? The European mirror infrastructure is well populated, as is the North American - Africa and South America are a lot less supported.
