never used simple-scan, but skanlite (which wouldn't be first choice for GNOME users, probably). nevertheless, skanlite does have a quick preview scan and allows to select the scan area -- and is much simpler than xsane. re. color correction, IMO that belongs into an image editor, not a scan program.
Is the proposed move toward this as the default application part of the i-ification of the world? Dropping everything that is useful, just to make it look good?
