You can't even say right now what is the format with "best" compression ratio. I even don't want the best ratio for the logs. BTW the best compression format can't be used on all machines. (For example xz -9 requires 674 MB RAM when compressing, very funny on vm or embedded). My logrotate is very happy when calling xz about 25 times per year per machine.
