My nick is davepl and has been for a long time. This is taking up my precious time.
This may be related to FreeNode's recent auth changes IMO. They moved away from NickServ to SASL auth.
It looks more like you have a " " space in front of your /msg, which would send it to the active channel. / must be the first character.
