kernel-desktop is the default kernel for x86_64, kernel-default is for i586 without pae
We considered a rename of kernel-default to kernel-oldhardware, but decided not to.

I was too hasty in my sayings and doings, again :( I may have heard what you said before, not sure. But I sure do remember now, after several attempts to install vboxdrv and NVidia modules and rebooting more than I normally do in a year, why I kept using kernel-default. And I'll keep it again.
