Another way of looking at this is seeing pigz just as the next version of gzip given that the authors of the latter have not adjusted it to the needs of many users in 2011. It's not that we give admins (or users) the option to use every single glibc version released the last ten years on openSUSE 12.1, either, and the differences between those probably are bigger.
