From the changelog:
* Fr Apr 20 2012 crrodriguez@opensuse.org - Switch to default archive type to POSIX.1-2001, which is ten years old and has no limits on filesize, filename length etc.
So to which tar implementation does this apply?
I'll leave it to you to guess the answer by yourself.
Hint: the question was asked on the *openSUSE*-factory list. Another hint: Felix mentioned the version he is using.
I see no clear hint on whether he was writing about gtar or the tar in busy box. BTW: a more or less useful POSIX-1.2001 tar support is big. Before star did include support for POSIX.1-2001, it compiled to a binary of the half size of gtar even though it had comparable features. Now star has become big (1.5x the size of gtar). One reason is that it now includes a working incremental backup system, the other is that it includes POSIX.1-2001 support. - well star also includes libfind. In general: do not expect a useful tar implementation in a binary that is optimized for size.
