Agreed. This is something I've contended with since I started using Linux. Too many packages have completely unnessessary dependings on other hardware or software. This wastes bandwidth because all these packages require updates. I shouldn't have to install libraries to support a Palm Pilot to use a PIM unless I have one. Or SCSI, Firewire, USB, etc. If you have older machines that don't have this hardware, why should you install support for them(well MAYBE USB. But not firewire). If your system detects that you've installed new hardware, then either have the nessessary files on the drive to be installed OR connect and get them.
