You're seeing bug#577825 and I have no idea what causes it.
I understand kde 4.4rc3 had a major memory leak that is resolved in kde 4.4 that was just released. If your lucky that may have been the cause? It's worth waiting on the actual 4.4 release anyway before doing too much troubleshooting.
