After starting X before logging in, <ctrl><alt><back-space><back-space>, resets X and problem is gone.
I don't believe that the NVidia driver but some change in starting X, perhaps timing.
Is this feasible?
Notice that I didn't have the problem before yesterday and now have it with 4 previous NVidia drivers which didn't display the problem.

This "reset X and a garbled screen is OK again" does also appear as a workaround in bug nr 779447, which is a duplicate of771392, though that was issued against 12.2, kernel 3.4XXXX. Hardware also Nvidia, but driver nouveau. Was diagnosed as a kernel regression. But maybe it has nothing to do with this one...
