The resolution is fine. The problem is when I want both screens to show the same image, the configuration wants to change to 1024 x 768.
For the sound the solution is simple - run 'Pulse Audio Volume Control' from the menu (install pavucontrol if it's not there) and you can control, for each running application, which sound device their output goes to.
