Raymond just submitted a fix for glib2 that will put "GNOME's mime associations" correctly into gnome-mimeapps.list. This file won't be used by Plasma and as such the issue is solved for Plasma...
Very good news!
Plasma is reading /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml. Yes?
the files in /usr/share/mime define WHAT mime types there are, not which application to use by default to open any given file of said mimetype. That's what mimeapps.list (former defaults.list) is doing.
