Ok Greg, you can start in something that is probably familiar to you, mkinitrd..
I am not familiar at all with mkinitrd, sorry.
mkinitrd_setup which is in /sbin needs /usr/bin/perl ... so does update-bootloader, module_upgrade..etc..
and pretty much everything there does too :-)
