I never said you needed one. A Dual Xeon was compared to a G4. They're not comparable in the same way you wouldn't compare a Celeron to a Xeon these days.
In a way. The Xeon's major advantage is the dual cpus and 100Mhz fsb. However, the G4 is touted as being faster than the P3, so it's not too off. Besides, a dual 500 is comparable to a 750Mhz chip in many ways, so it's not that far off. The big disadvantage is the G4's 50Mhz memory bus.
If you're on older hardware with older video chips the glitz never gets enabled in the first place - certainly nothing like Compiz and if you mean stuff like Plasma does on KDE.. I have that running on a 400MHz G2_LE core with 128MB. It runs pretty well if you trim the system first. This is an extreme case... it requires a hell of a lot of work but it's definitely possible to knock KDE4 down so it's basically featureless (exactly like you want it) with barely anything done on startup except get into X and start networking.
Which shows me it's just not a compelling alternative. The devs seems to have fallen into the "it's there, let's waste it" trap. They have forgotten their roots so to speak. While I don't have a problem targeting new users, I don't think it should be done at the expense of the "old timers" like me. I have seen no real features I care for in KDE4, and KDE3 is more stable. Maybe KDE4 will get there. I have requested that KPersonalizer get ported to qt4 so we can have a way to turn off all those useless(to me) desktop effects.
Of course it's crippled the moment you start OpenOffice or so..
Which is why I don't use it and don't recommend it. KOffice works much better and does everything I need. Heck, I do just fine with Wordpad in WinDoZe.
I really think more people than me actually use Google Desktop.
Never meant that, but my experience has shown that the majority of my customers don't use it even though it got snuck in on them. Same with Windows Search. I disable the install ask, especially on slow systems. If they want it, they can install it. I've seen it and Google Search bring a system to it's knees just like beagle. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
