What version of openSUSE & GNOME are you using, that might help to locate the problem, esp if there is a known bug.

I guess I just through that out there. I have MS6 with GDE 2.27.5. I should also mention I set the initial runlevel to 3 on the installation, and this began upon changing it to 5. I found last night that starting an xserver session and bypassing GDM has the same problem, so apparently this is not a GDM problem.
