The X.org version string is not wrong at all. The proprietary ATI fglrx driver simply doesn't support X.org 7.2. The version string had therefore been "faked" in the past so that fglrx can at least be installed, but this is no longer the case because it is very dirty. Note that it is the _correct_ version string which fglrx doesn't like. Only ATI can fix this.
