I think the problem that annoys most system administrators here is not using some fancy tools but understanding (and thus having control over) what really happens. Unfortunately the documentation situation with hal and related tools is pretty bad, although this is not a specific problem of openSUSE. The problem here is similar to the Windows registry problem. The reason why people many people don't like the Windows registry system is that they are frightened by seeing a large amount of information most of which they don't understand.
