The goal is to replace the home grown VCS with something what people know. And where other distros have proofen that it can be used for packaging.
Yet they will still have to deal with OBS and Gitea, two platforms likely new to any contributors.
Gitea is very similar to other git forges. So long as simple contribuitions only need interaction with gitea, and not OBS this simplifies things a lot.
It's not like osc for scm is complicated by any means either. Anyone familiar with git should find osc easier or as easy to use than git. At least I do.
Not only it is complicated, it's bad. When trying to look through history of some packages something that I would see in git in uder a minute took tens of minutes to investigate, and for some changes I did not find where it came from conclusively. It's not like better tools for working with the OBS internal VCS could not be written but it has not happened until now so I am not holding my breath. Coverting to git gives us access to the tooling others are writing, we do not need to roll our own. Thanks Michal
