There's nothing to `fix' on the FreeType side. For good subpixel rendering, you need to apply a good colour filter (which is able to handle gamma correction too if desired). Microsoft's colour filter is patented, so you have to come up with a different one. While FreeType provides the necessary infrastructure, a higher-level application or library has to handle that.
