Try on cmdline:
nomodeset vga=788
Is that better?
For the record, this is really *bad* advice. Firstly, the resolution can be changed more flexibly using the video= kernel parameter and secondly this is likely to cause trouble when using Xorg (i.e. falling back to the VESA driver) as KMS is becoming mandatory for more an more drivers.
Note the form of response: "try", "is that better?" Before writing that response, on X600 with RC1 desktop kernel I tried alternatively both video=800x600 and video=1600x1200, and got what appears to be standard text mode 80x25. Then I tried nomodeset vga=788 and nomodeset vga=0x31a, and got expected traditional framebuffer results on the ttys both ways. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
