one goal was to understand what is going on under the surface. And I am very pleased about your and Felix' explanations. I learnt a lot about the backgounds.
Switching between nvidia and nouveau should be as easy as installing/uninstalling the nvidia driver. There's not even a need to modify the Xorg config actually (nvidia will be preferred if it is installed). If you want to switch on "runtime" without uninstalling the nvidia driver, it gets more difficult of course.
This is one of the things I learnt :) Whats more: - I learnt, that not nouveau but modesetting is the driver I can use instead of nvidia. - I succeeded in loading the modesetting driver. - I learnt the differences between kernel modules and X drivers. - And I had a lot of fun testing all those things ;)
