VLC is a Qt application and therefore its icon should appear in the system tray just fine. But it is hidden now by default (even in KDE4), that's maybe a change in VLC itself (probably because of the change to Qt5). Click on the up-arrow in the system tray to see it.
No, it does not display, hence my comment.
It does here. And again, VLC is a Qt(5) application, so it should just use the "new" (well, it's a few years old already as well) system tray specification. But as I said, it's hidden by default since a few days, so check the hidden system tray icons. Or are you still using the Qt4 based version? Then make sure you have sni-qt installed.
But then, Plasma5 does display its own mediaplayer control in the system tray automatically if you start VLC...
But only good for start/stop/fast-forward/fast-back, no volume, ...
Yes. That's a generic mediaplayer control that supports all media players using MPRIS. Similar to the old mediaplayer plasmoid in KDE4, but part of the system tray now (by default).
There is a KF5 port of yakuake already which does use the KF5 based konsole, but that's not been released yet. It's just a matter of time though... Looking forward to that release.
A development snapshot is already available in KDE:Unstable:Extra if you want to try it: http://software.opensuse.org/package/yakuake5 (click on "Show not supported distributions" to find the Tumbleweed version) It should be stable already in my experience, but then I'm not really using yakuake.
