Here is my personal situation: If openSUSE/TW enforces -v2 or higher I will have to either buy new hardware for my home server or find a new linux for my homeserver.
I was on the exact same boat, just that I would have had some time as my home server runs Leap ;-)
Now put this in the limelight of the current economical situation, with inflation AND crazy price hikes from the energy providers: which is more likely?
Energy price would actually hint that you look at getting a newer machine. Yes, I did not think this was true, too. My old machine (FUJITSU ESPRIMO E5730, Core2 Duo E8500@3.16GHz, 8GB RAM) was using about 40W idling (disks off,...). The new one (FUJITSU ESPRIMO P757, Core i3-6100@3.70GHz, 8GB RAM) is using about 20W in the same configuration. 20 Watts saved is about 175kWh per year. I'm going to pay 38,92¢/kWh from 2023-01-01. This means I'm going to save about 68€ per year with the new machine. The machine cost about 85€ from a professional seller on ebay. Do your own math. (Even if the machine is under load, I could not spot higher power usage than the old machine had, but I did not do sufficiently large samples to be 100% sure. Even if the peak power consumption is higher, it is probably also much faster finished with the cpu intensive task. But as this server is mostly idling >90% of the time, there was just no reason to conduct extensive tests on this). I'm all for keeping old machines running. But the "energy cost for my 24/7 running home server" argument is not a good one to make.
