What does it take to enable sound for non-GNOME-core-apps like skype and pidgin? Skype for example shows just "virtual device" in the pulldown menus in its audio settings. The situation with pidgin is not clear, in its settings the method is set to "auto". There are other options like ALSA or ESD, but no pulseaudio.
Other apps like the audio setting in control center and new mails in Thunderbird play their sounds just fine. Even totem plays Jux0MAtYxjA.
How does one find out what skype and pidgin expect regarding sound output? The strace output of skype does not mention any /dev or /proc/asound access.
On PA-enabled systems, the signal via ALSA native API is routed via alsa-lib pulse plugin over PA, thus there is no direct hardware access from the application itself.
