The /usr/lib/texmf/bin/x86_64-linux/pdflatex binary exists.
On mine 64bit RC2 there is a symlink:
$ ll /usr/bin/pdflatex lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 2010-07-09 13:48 /usr/bin/pdflatex -> ../lib/texmf/bin/x86_64-linux/pdflatex
