? also few details about your ruby environment can help like if you using rvm, rbenv or if you are using standard MRI or different version.
Now that I remember, I was learning a bit of ruby from a book back when I was in 12.3 and it had me execute curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby ruby install 1.9.3 rvm use 1.9.3 --default could this be the root cause?
