Intel graphics? The intel driver is so horribly broken, it's not funny anymore. I'm seriously considering running fbdev X server on top of i915's framebuffer.
I have the same effect and indeed it's not funny to have to reboot your PC every time.
I don't have to reboot, it just logs me out a few times every day. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596473 and then there's https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=597078, but I have not seen that since I disabled desktop effects.
I am looking for solutions, but can you explain what you mean with running fbdev X server on top of the i915 framebuffer ?
Well, i915 with KMS does create a "normal" framebuffer device. It should be possible to run the old and simple fbdev X server. I'll have to find out what I have to put into xorg.conf to achieve that, though. And of course you'll lose all acceleration, xrandr etc.
What Intel graphics card do you have ? I have a 965GM.
