At least a gig of RAM can considered as a requirement these days. For less, something like an embedded distrib would be more appropriate...
Why? With KDE4 plus Firefox 512MB RAM was perfectly adequate in my testing. In fact it is very hard to get the VM to use swap space at all, without increasing the default value of "swapiness"; which I think shows the default is poorly chosen. I didn't think 256MB RAM was so awful either under i586, the VM system performed reasonably well (Pentium 1.6Hhz CPU system with horriible Rambus RIMM memory Intel tried to foister on market at time of P4's intro, making an inexpensive upgrade harder to find). I did use Net Install, and prepare swapspace once I'd got it booted however. Ideally I'd find an extra compatible RDRAM, but it was alright. Using XFCE or LXDE would be more pleasurable, I think than GNOME or KDE4 if you're going to run applications. Perhaps my experience was better, because I added the KDE4 basics, and may have avoided stuff like nepomuk and beagle, as I had limitted space for /. There's no reason to tell ppl to not use old machines, just because you'ld not spec out such a machine for desktop. 256MB RAM is plenty for many SOHO server applications. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
