I'm trying to install systemd on 11.3. Has anyone been successful installing systemd on openSUSE 11.3?
It requires recent: kernel (/sys/fs/cgroup/) udev (service files, interfaces) dbus (interfaces) mkinitrd (bugfixes) ...
It might need fixes/changes from: aaa_base screen ConsoleKit ...
It's not tested there at all, it might work to update all these packages in 11.3, but things might go wrong.
It's probably easier to have a own partition for Factory and just follow it there, instead of messing around with new base system packages in older releases.

Ooops sent pressed the wrong buttons!
I just installed systemd-12-55.1.x86_64.rpm, updated udev, dbus-1 and mkinitrd. It would not load due to an error message "could not mount /sys/fs/cgroups". So, I just reverted back to my regular setup. It's not worth the time and trouble with openSUSE 11.3.
That's expected. The 11.3 kernel has cgroups disabled on the desktop kernel.

However, in 11.4 M3, I installed the systemd-12-55.1.x86_64.rpm and when I select to shutdown it just stalls at the prompt. I have the press cntrl+alt+del.
I read a blog where the users recommended installed dbus-1 from Factory before installing systemd from Kay Sievers home:Factory_Snapshot directory (which no longer exists). It's possible that he had a newer kernel installed. http://ifup.org/2010/07/22/systemd-on-opensuse-11.3/
Systemd itself changed to require /sys/fs/cgroup/. That only exists in the latest kernel.
Now I know. But, I'm glad I tried as it was a learning experience.
