zmd is not a required component. yast and zmd share the zypp resolver. Is true, if you want a cmd line client you need zmd. But yast can do the work if you don't need zmd features.
zmd is a plus which give people wanting zmd enterprise one to many capabilities a straighforward path.
Just adding: the biggest issue with ZMD is the 1st stage of the installation, where we are running in very restricted environment, but we still need all bells'n'whistles of a package management available. Stano
