I just installed kmail5 replacing kmail4 and korganizer and kontact....
kmail4 would connect and send mail fine, but the same settings on kmail5 do not connect to smtp according to kmail's error notice. In fact, I cannot connect to any mail smtp services. Is there some magic incantation I am unaware?

This may appear as bike-shedding, in this case please have patience. I had a case (do not know the reasons), where kmail had shifted to offline mode inadvertently. Did you check you are actually in online mode after the upgrade?
No, I did not, but checking now see that it *is* "online". I am just an occasional kmail user and really not familiar.
And did you restart the machine or the desktop (normally one does not do this, I know, but despite this "common knowledge" it sometimes solves things after an upgrade).
